Planning for your wedding is exciting, full of highs and lows and can be stressful at times. To help make your wedding planning experience a little more stress free, here are some tips that may help you on your road to saying I do!

1. Some venues are booked up to two years in advance.

The best advice is to begin with the location search right at the beginning of the wedding planning and as soon as you have your date, book your venue. The majority of weddings take place at the weekend (mainly Saturday) and over half of weddings taking place between May and September.  That’s a lot and means that those popular weekends in June/July at the popular venues will go very quickly.  It is better to have a place reserved and to ask for a refund later (if you change your mind), than to not have any venue at all as the months draw close.

 2. Book the other suppliers well in advance as well

The good suppliers will also be in demand. That includes photographers, DJs, make-up artists, florists. Booking them well ahead of time will result in a less stressful experience as the deadlines approach!

3. Everything will cost more than you expect

Weddings are a costly affair and according to Brides Magazine, the average British wedding now comes to a total of around £24,000!

There are many ways to save money and still have a great wedding. If you are looking at savings, then don’t break the bank on the little things. Sparkling wine or champagne? Choose the right sparkling wine and your guests won’t be able to tell the difference. Posh chairs or plastic chairs? No one will remember the chairs in a years’ time - there are cheap but stylish options or alternatively use a chair cover and then it doesn’t matter what type of chair is underneath.

Some things will cost more – for example, there are more flowers in a real bridal bouquet than in a loose decoration bouquet.

 4. Organise your wedding related stuff – use a folder!

There will be a lot of things to keep track of, make sure you have a system in place to keep track of receipts, invoices, official documents etc.

5. Hidden Costs

Suppose you find the perfect location, make sure you ask about extra costs. For example many venues will have a preferred list of caterers and alcohol providers. If for example you want to bring your own wine then there could be an extra cost you need to pay the venue (corkage).

6. Wedding dresses can have a delivery time of several months.

Time can fly by when planning to get married - and then, all of sudden, oh no!, the dream dress is gone!. At some shops, wedding dresses that you try on, are samples, and your chosen dress is subsequently ordered especially for you from the manufacturer. On average, you can expect a delivery time of four months. Ask in advance whether a dress is sold directly from the manufacturer or actually in stock at the shop.

 7. Consider using a wedding planner

Planning a wedding takes a lot of time and effort. A wedding planner can help take some of the stress out of planning it all. If you decide not to use a planner, say for example you work part time, it is still advisable not to assume you can do things all by yourself. Use friends or family members help you with the running around.

 8. “Time buffer” your wedding day

As much as you would like things don’t always go to plan and there are often small delays that can affect an overly tight schedule. It is better to plan in buffers of time that allow for any small slippage. This will mean you are less stressed throughout the day.

9. Include your partner

You may find your partner is uninterested in the finer details of the planning. It is wise to include them in as much as possible or at least offer so that they do don’t feel left out. Whilst their contribution may be small at least they will feel like they have had a role in planning your special day.

10. Professionally taken wedding photographs are simply the best reminder and worth their price.

Wedding photographers are expensive but the results can be amazing! No matter how many of your friends own a digital camera and even if they seem to take such beautiful pictures from their holidays, wedding photography is a completely different deal! Pictures are the most special things to remind us of the wedding. Plan your day well and allow 1 hour at the least for pictures. A professional photographer should be able to advise you but one tips is on the day, create moments - laugh, dance, jump or do something crazy! So, that when you look back at the pictures, you will be happy you created those moments!
