Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet is a unique eighteenth century industrial works where visitors can catch a glimpse of life at home and at work at a rural scythe and steelworks. Abbeydale Works was once a producer of agricultural tools and the largest water-powered industrial site on the River Sheaf. It is now a group of Grade I and Grade II listed buildings and a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The site has workers' houses, waterwheels, workshops, tilt hammers, a grinding hull and the last complete crucible steel furnace surviving in the UK.
We are proud to announce that this historical venue is now available to host Civil Wedding Ceremonies. There are three stunning unique spaces at the Hamlet that are licensed for the ceremony.
One Hamlet - Three Choices of Ceremony Location
The Tilt Hammers - capacity 10
For an intimate ceremony, the Tilt Hammers are the most atmospheric part of the site. This really is Sheffield’s version of getting married over the anvil, more commonly associated with Gretna Green, with the water wheel driven shaft which powered the hammers in the background and the blacksmiths forge and anvil to the fore.
Although limited for numbers inside the Tilt Hammers, with its unglazed openings, friends and relatives are able to stand outside and see the Ceremony.
The Undercroft - capacity 30
Forming one side of the Hamlet’s courtyard this brick and stone built former covered store with its grinding wheel columns and views of the heritage buildings can be simply dressed to create a charming venue for a romantic Ceremony. Again being open sided there are opportunities for additional guests to see the Ceremony taking place.
The Learning Centre - capacity 80
The largest and most contemporary area for wedding ceremonies the Learning Centre is a modern stone built structure with high ceilings and oak beams inside.
The site can be hired for 3 or 4 hours depending on which of our options you choose, to include: time before the ceremony for guests to arrive and the wedding couple to meet the Registrar, the ceremony, time after the ceremony to enjoy some light refreshments, enjoy the surroundings and to take the all important photographs.
Although licensed for ceremonies there is a historic covenant applied to the Hamlet which prohibits alcohol from being allowed on the site. This, combined with the limited space in the buildings, means that we are unable to host large receptions and parties. However, we can still offer a sumptuous range of canapes or a genteel traditional English Tea accompanied with non alcoholic refreshments.
